귀어가족
Fishtown Family
십년 전 가난했던 나의 가족은 돈을 벌기 위해 충청남도 서천으로 ‘귀어’했다. 가족과 연고가 없는 이곳은 모든 것이 낯설었다. 읍내로 나가는 버스는 1시간을 기다려야 했고 저녁 8시가 되면 온 동네가 캄캄해졌다. 집 밖을 조금만 나가면 통발과 양식용 쭈꾸미의 소라집이 널브러져 있었고 고압 전기가 흐르는 곳에서는 말린 생선들이 널려 있었다. 홍원항 슬로프에 물이 차는 날이면 낚싯배들이 나란히 서서 낚시꾼들을 태웠고, 그 옆에서는 중장비가 멸치 배 갑판에서 그물을 뭍으로 옮기고 있었다.
어느날 아버지는 이곳에서 큰 어선을 구했고 그 배의 선장이 되었다. 아버지는 동백꽃이 가득 만개하는 마을을 보고 배의 이름을 ‘카멜리아’라고 지었다. 가끔 놀러 갔었던 바다는 가족의 생계수단이 되었고, 우리는 ‘귀어가족’이 됐다.
한때 도시를 떠나 여유와 낭만을 찾아 어촌, 농촌으로 내려가는 귀촌현상이 유행 했었다. 어촌으로 내려오는 사람들은 ‘귀어민’이라고 불린다.
최근 신문에서 귀어민들이 어촌의 삶에 적응하지 못하고 다시 도시로 돌아가 직장생활을 한다는 뉴스들이 보인다. 도시에서 내려온 사람들에게 혈연, 지연이 얽혀 텃세가 심한 어촌은 이웃이나 동네 친구조차 만들기 쉽지 않았을 것이다.
최근 신문에서 귀어민들이 어촌의 삶에 적응하지 못하고 다시 도시로 돌아가 직장생활을 한다는 뉴스들이 보인다. 도시에서 내려온 사람들에게 혈연, 지연이 얽혀 텃세가 심한 어촌은 이웃이나 동네 친구조차 만들기 쉽지 않았을 것이다.
우리 가족이 서천에 정착한지 어느덧 약 십년이 됐다. 그동안 막내 동생은 이곳에서 초등학교, 중학교를 졸업하고 고등학교에 입학했다. 어린 동생 덕분에 가족은 서천의 작은 어촌에 잘 정착했다. 막내 동생에겐 이곳이 고향이고 나는 여전히 도시에서 온 외지인이다. 동생과 나는 한 가족이지만 이곳을 보고 느끼는 방법은 조금 다르다.
나는 아직 낯선 이곳에서 우리 가족의 새로운 터전인 어촌의 모습과 귀어가족의 삶을 기록한다.
Fishtown Family
Ten years ago, my poor family move to Seocheon in Chungcheongnam-do to make a living. This village, where we had no relatives, felt completely unfamiliar. Buses to town ran only once an hour, and by 8 PM, the entire neighborhood was enveloped in darkness. In Seocheon, we encountered numerous seafood restaurants specializing in shellfish and dried fish spread out under high-voltage power lines.
On days when the waters rose at Hongwon Port's slope, fishing boats lined up to ferry anglers, while nearby, heavy machinery transferred nets onto decks of anchovy boats.
One day, my father bought a large fishing vessel and became its captain. My father named the boat "Camellia" after seeing a village full of camellia flowers. The sea we once visited occasionally for vacation became our family's livelihood, and we became a "Fishtown family."
There was a trend in the past where people left cities in search of easy going life and romance, moving to rural and fishing villages—a phenomenon known as "relocation." Those who moved to rural areas were called "relocated residents." However, recent news reports indicate that many of these relocated residents struggle to adapt to rural life and eventually return to urban areas for employment. Rural communities, with their strong ties and close-knit networks, might not have been easy even for those with familial or ancestral connections.
It has been nearly a decade since our family settled in Seocheon. During this time, my youngest sibling graduated from elementary and middle school here and has now entered high school. Thanks to my youngest sister, my family has successfully settled in this small rural fishing village of Seocheon. To my youngest sister, this place is home, while I remain an outsider from the city. Though we are one family, our perspectives on and feelings towards this place differ somewhat.
I continue to document the sights of my family's new foundation in this unfamiliar rural area and the life of a relocated family.
カメリア号:貴魚家族
10年前、裕福ではなかった私の家族はお金を稼ぐために忠清南道舒川に「帰漁」した。 家族と縁故のないここは、すべてが不慣れだった。 町内に出るバスは1時間待たなければならず、夕方8時になると町が真っ暗になった。 家の外を少し出れば、丸ごと足と養殖用イイダコのサザエ屋が散らばっており、高圧電気が流れるところでは干した魚が散らばっていた。
洪原港ゲレンデに水が満ちる日には釣り船が並んで立って釣り人たちを乗せ、その横では重装備がカタクチイワシ船甲板から網を陸に移していた。
ある日、父はここで大きな漁船を救い、その船の船長になった。 父親は椿がいっぱい満開する村を見て船の名前を「カメリア」と名付けた。 たまに遊びに行った海は家族の生計手段になり、私たちは「鬼魚家族」になった。
私たち家族が舒川に定着してからいつのまにか約10年になった。 その間、私は江陵で大学を卒業し、漣川で将校として軍生活をした。 除隊後はリュックサック旅行に行ってきた後、ソウルで写真を学んだ。 末弟はここで小学校、中学校を卒業して高校に入学した。 末弟にはここが故郷であり、私は依然として都市から来た外地人だ。 弟と私は一家族だが、ここを見て感じる方法は少し違う。
私はまだ見慣れないここで、私たち家族の新しい基盤である平凡な漁村の風景と鬼魚家族の暮らしを記録する。
