내부순환로
Naebu Expressway
서울의 북쪽에 새롭게 정착해 살면서 대학원을 가거나 할머니를 보러 가는 길에는 머리 위로 내부순환로가 도시를 가로지르고 있었다. 이전까지 살았던 동네에서는 마을 위로 가로지르는 고가도로를 본적이 거의 없었기 때문에 내부순환로 아래에서 살아가는 사람들과 마을의 모습이 생소하였고 자연스럽게 내부순환로와 주변 환경에 관심을 갖게 되어 작업으로 발전하게 되었다.
내부순환로는 1995년 개통하여 비교적 최근 2021년에는 월드컵대교 구간과 2024년에는 월곡IC에서 정릉 방향 도로가 새롭게 개통이 되는 등 지금도 계속해서 확장되고 있다. 성산대교에서 월드컵대교 북단까지 서울북부를 통과하여 강변북로를 통해 다시 성산대교까지 순환하는 총 길이는 40.1km, 내부순환로 자체 길이는 19.73km의 서울특별시 30번 자동차 전용 도로이며 전 구간이 고가도로로 이루어져 있다.
내부순환로를 기준으로 나뉘는 서울의 안과 밖은 동네마다 다른 정서를 볼 수 있다. 마포, 연희, 홍제, 정릉, 미아, 동대문, 성수를 모두 이어주는 내부순환로는 조선시대의 수도권인 성저십리의 모습과 유사하다. 그 흔적은 현시대에 이어져 내부순환로를 중심으로 바깥쪽은 신축 아파트, 안쪽은 붉은 벽돌의 구옥과 빌라가 대조 되어 보이는 모양새로 도로 안쪽과 바깥쪽의 지명과 분위기는 지금도 다르게 남아있다. 이처럼 같은 서울이라는 테두리 안에 있음에도 마포에서 부터 성수까지 이어진 풍경은 동네마다 비슷하면서 조금씩 다르다.
대중교통을 이용하는 나는 내부순환로 아래를 다니며 필연적으로 도로 아래에서 많은 시간을 보냈다. 2019년 부터 지금까지 도로 아래서 시간을 보내며 진행한 이 작업은 도시를 순환하는 도로 아래에서 살아가는 나와 같은 사람들과 도로를 중심으로 변화하는 도시에 대한 기록물이다.
Naebu Expressway
When I settled in the northern part of Seoul and started traveling to graduate school or visiting my grandmother, I noticed the Naebu Expressway crossing the city above me.
In the neighborhood where I had lived previously, I had rarely seen elevated roads cutting through a town, so the sight of people and villages living beneath the Naebu Expressway felt unfamiliar and new. This naturally led me to develop an interest in the road and its surrounding environment, which eventually evolved into a project.
The Naebu Expressway opened in 1995 and has been continuously expanding, with recent additions such as the World Cup Bridge section in 2021 and the newly opened road from Wolgok IC to Jeongneung in 2024.
It is a 40.1 km-long circular road that crosses northern Seoul, running from Seongsan Bridge to the northern end of World Cup Bridge and back to Seongsan Bridge via Gangbyeonbuk-ro. The Naebu Expressway itself is 19.73 km long and designated as Seoul Special City Route 30, an exclusive roadway for vehicles. The entire route is composed of elevated roads.
The Naebu Expressway divides the inner and outer parts of Seoul, revealing different moods and atmospheres in each neighborhood. Connecting areas such as Mapo, Yeonhui, Hongje, Jeongneung, Mia, Dongdaemun, and Seongsu, the Naebu Expressway resembles the old “Sungjeosimni” boundary of Seoul’s capital region during the Joseon Dynasty. Traces of this historical boundary persist to this day, with new apartment complexes dominating the outer side of the road and old red-brick houses and villas lining the inner side. The names and atmospheres of the areas inside and outside the road remain distinct.
Even within the same boundary of Seoul, the landscapes stretching from Mapo to Seongsu share similarities yet differ subtly from one neighborhood to the next.
As someone who relies on public transportation, I often traveled under the Naebu Expressway and naturally spent significant time beneath it. Since 2019, I have been documenting this experience, capturing the lives of people like myself living beneath the elevated road and the transformations of the city centered around it.
内部循環路

ソウル北部に新たに住むようになり、大学院に通ったり祖母に会いに行く道中、頭上を横切る内部循環路が都市を貫いているのを目にしました。
以前住んでいた地域では、町の上を横切る高架道路を見ることがほとんどなかったため、内部循環路の下で暮らす人々や町の姿は非常に新鮮で、自然と内部循環路やその周辺環境に関心を持つようになり、それが作品へと発展しました。
内部循環路は1995年に開通し、比較的最近では2021年にワールドカップ大橋区間が、2024年には月谷ICから貞陵方向への道路が新たに開通するなど、現在も拡張が続いています。
聖山大橋からワールドカップ大橋北端までソウル北部を横断し、江辺北路を通じて再び聖山大橋に戻る全長40.1kmの循環道路で、そのうち内部循環路自体の長さは19.73kmに達し、ソウル特別市30号の自動車専用道路に指定されています。全区間が高架道路で構成されています。
内部循環路を基準にソウルの内側と外側を分けると、それぞれの地域ごとに異なる感情や雰囲気を見ることができます。麻浦、延禧、弘済、貞陵、彌阿、東大門、聖水をすべて繋ぐ内部循環路は、朝鮮時代の首都圏「城底十里」の姿と似ています。その痕跡は現代にも受け継がれ、内部循環路を中心に外側には新築マンション、内側には赤いレンガの古い家屋やヴィラが対照的に見える風景が広がります。道路の内側と外側では地名や雰囲気が今でも異なって残されています。
このように、同じソウルという枠組みの中にあっても、麻浦から聖水に至るまでの風景は地域ごとに似ていながら少しずつ異なっています。
公共交通機関を利用する私は、内部循環路の下を通ることが多く、必然的に道路の下で多くの時間を過ごしました。2019年から現在に至るまで道路の下で時間を過ごしながら進めてきたこの作品は、都市を循環する道路の下で暮らす私や同じような人々、そして道路を中心に変化していく都市についての記録です。
